Meet Your Instructor

Mike Fields is the owner of and flight instructor for Freedom Aviation TN. Mike's fascination with flying began early. A family friend took Mike and his dad flying which started Mike on a lifelong love affair with flight. After soloing at age 16 Mike continued with single-minded determination working toward a career as a professional pilot.

In 1985 he obtained his Flight Instructor Certificate (CFI). In short order he also earned his multi-engine and commercial ratings along with CFII and MEI certificates and began flight instructing at a small school in Arlington, Texas. While teaching a full load of students Mike gained the rest of the rating necessary for a commercial flying career. He worked at several regional airlines before becoming a pilot for Southwest Airlines.

In 1999 Mike heeded the call of the wild and moved to Anchorage, Alaska where he flew for Alaska Airlines for nearly 20 years. He retired from Alaska Airlines in June of 2020.  During his stay in Alaska Mike also successfully owned and operated Land and Sea Aviation, a Part 141 flight school, for a number of years.  He has extensive tailwheel experience and is an experienced float instructor. In addition, Mike has an A&P license as well as an IA ticket and will be doing much of the maintenance of the school's aircraft. Currently he is teaching and flying out of both Rockwood Municipal Airport and Meadowlake Airport.
